The Shared Aesthetics of Clashing Voices (essay)

Essay part of an ongoing (2007-) project on the shared aesthetics and historical aspects of narrow-interval music traditions in Southeastern Europe. In highland parts of Croatia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria, performers of narrow-range vocal and instrumental polyphony experience unusual intervals (e.g. of a minor second) as harmonious. Interestingly, the practice of narrow-range polyphonies appears to be essentially multi-ethnic (this is why I call it a shared aesthetics of clashing voices). Western conceptions of consonance and dissonance do not provide adequate tools for an understanding of these aesthetics. Neither did numerous speculative hypotheses of the music's lineage provide truly productive insights. Research for the essay is supported by Prince Bernhard Culture Fund.

    Recalling RFID (19-20 October 2007)

The two-day public event Recalling RFID centered around the 'invisible' technology RFID (radio frequency identification) with a public seminar, two workshops and the Nabaz'mob smart opera. Initiated and organized by Richard de Boer (De Balie), Sabine Niederer (Institute for Network Cultures) and Rob van Kranenburg (Waag Society), the program brought together distinctive conceptions of RFID and its uses, reconfiguring discourses as dialogue.
