Recalling RFID (Amsterdam, 19-20 October 2007)
Two-day public event on RFID and things to come > reports & pictures
recall
1 bring (a fact, event, or situation) back into one's mind, esp. so as to recount it to others; remember.
2 officially order (someone) to return to a place.
RFID (radio frequency identification) uses radio waves to identify people, animals or objects carrying encoded microchips. For government and industry, RFID signifies economic innovation, while for the futurist it marks the next stage in digital connectivity. RFID's pervasiveness will only increase in the years to come, forcing shifts in perceptions of the public sphere and private domain.
Alongside the promise RFID brings, there are implications for security, individual privacy and beyond. If it was not already clear, RFID clues us in to the fact that in digital networks, there is no forgetting or memory loss. As such, RFID lends itself both to optimism and fear, forming a microcosm through which a collective, ambivalent relationship to technology is put on display. Recalling RFID centered around this 'invisible' technology with a public seminar (Friday 19 Oct), two workshops and the Nabaz'mob smart opera (Saturday 20 Oct). The program brought together distinctive conceptions of RFID and its uses, reconfiguring discourses as dialogue.
"Reading the programme of the event, I could imagine how the organizer of the event creatively combined a balanced socio-technical event with an art show. Seminar, workshops and opera were put together as a package beyond any traditional event I have ever known. After reading two reports on the event, I am quite sure that I have just missed a milestone in the RFID history." — Adi Tedjasaputra (RFID Asia, 27 Oct 2007).
Initiated and organized by Richard de Boer (coordination, De Balie) Sabine Niederer (Institute for Network Cultures) Rob van Kranenburg

Reports on Recalling RFID
"This unique event included presentations on RFID, debates and digital connectivity scenarios by industry representatives, academics, artists, privacy advocates, programmers and consultants. Recalling the current state of affairs and looking to the future, it turned out to be a very interesting, high quality conference."
Seminar + workshops: full report by Masters of Media, 25 October 2007.
Results of the DMI workshop Mapping Future Histories of RFID.
"The Recalling RFID program put a strong focus on the question where are we now, and more importantly on the question: where are we heading? Session moderator Rob van Kranenburg mentions the concept of (Un)common Ground as a way to debate this move towards RFID and bring together people from various disciplines, in this case the field of RFID, and share experiences to perhaps create new visions."
Seminar: report by Twan Eikelenboom (Virtueel Platform), 23 October 2007.
"Recalling RFID was exceptionally successful at creating a space where diverse viewpoints on RFID were expressed, shared and debated. The level of understanding of the issues from all sides was very high. This resulted in a measured sense of agreement, rather than opposition. I found this rather refreshing and even managed to concentrate through lengthy discussions of privacy, security, freedom and control."
Seminar: raw notes by Timo Arnall, 22 October 2007.
"De discussie aan het eind van de dag was vooral inhoudelijk en meer diepgaand dan bij eerdere RFID seminars. Dat lag misschien aan het feit dat er ditmaal geen politici aanwezig waren."
Seminar: verslag Johan van Someren, 23 oktober 2007.
